A PR seminar and a one-to-one PR clinic I did recently for Manchester-based NPO Design Initiative has brought young artist Gemma Parker some much-needed regional exposure.
Gemma, a Manchester-based painter whose work explores the world of burlesque artistes and notions of female beauty, attended a PR seminar we carried out for Design Initiative back in May, which was followed by a day of one-to-one clinics for the attending designers and artists.
When I found out that Gemma was about to paint burlesque star Scarlet Fever (who famously came into burlesque through Channel Four's Faking It programme), I sent a quick e-mail to an editor friend who I thought would be interested, and as a result the current issue of a Cheshire glossy runs Gemma's story. There's also strong interest from burlesque magazines.
But besides this, Gemma says the PR training "has helped me think much bigger about my work and what I'm capable of." This is just about the nicest thing we can hear from people, and it shows that sound professional advice around PR can really help people see with fresh eyes the value and originality of what they do.
